Sports medicine focuses on treatment and preventive care for athletes. Whether you are an amateur, professional, or "weekend enthusiast," you can experience a sports injury and benefit from alternative medicine.

Injury during sports can be caused by many factors, from environmental to physiological and psychological. The continuing growth in the popularity of recreational sports and fitness has multiplied the number of strains, sprains and breaks which can be classified as sports injuries. Muscles, tendons, and ligaments depend on proper joint movement and nerve supply for peak performance. Injuries can restrict range of motion, reduce strength, slow reflexes, shorten endurance, and decrease performance.  Fortunately, alternative medicine offers the option of sports injury rehabilitation treatments and therapies without the risks of surgical and pharmaceutical approaches.

Most good sports medicine training programs focus on injury prevention and include core stability and sport specific training exercises.

Core Stability Training at ChiroMedica

Core stability training is essential to sports performance and injury prevention. The body's core muscles are the foundation for all other movement. Back, abdominal, diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles stabilize the spine and provide a solid foundation for movement in the extremities. When these muscles contract, they stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulders and create a solid base of support. We are then able to generate powerful movements of the extremities. The main concepts of core strengthening programs involve using many muscles in a coordinated movement. These movements utilize abdominal bracing, breathing control and are performed using stability balls, medicine balls, wobble boards, yoga or Pilate's exercise programs.

Sport Specific Training at ChiroMedica

Every sport involves specific functional movements that the body must coordinate. For example, a golf swing from set-up to follow through includes movements that involve every joint and muscle group in the body. Programs are designed to assist an athlete achieve desired goals like increasing speed, strength and endurance. First, an evaluation of strength, flexibility and biomechanics is performed. Following the evaluation, an individual strength and flexibility program is designed. The sets, repetitions, and exercise prescription is based on the patients fitness level and specific strength to bodyweight ratio's. With simple feedback, the progression of the program follows the body’s unique adaptation process to exercise.
